These were previous-development trees with handful of limbs (knots) and straight with tiny taper. This sort of logs didn't have to be hewn to suit very well alongside one another. Watchful notching minimized the scale with the gap between the logs and decreased the amount of chinking (sticks or rocks) or daubing (mud) required to fill the hole.
